Case study:
A Fire Alarm application
The client:
A Restaurant & Wine Bar Group.
The risk:
A basement and ground floor location within a large multi-storey block where life safety and property protection are both paramount
Their Managing Director told us:
“We needed an addressable system which satisfied the necessary standards and requirements but I was most anxious the décor of the establishment was not affected by anything unsightly. I had appointed an architect to design a suitable system then seek tenders.”
The solution:
A wire free analogue addressable fire alarm system, comprising automatic fire detectors, manual call points and evacuation sounders and strobe lights.
We proposed a wire free solution, after conducting a suitability test and survey, for several reasons:
- In order that the installation had no detrimental effect to décor through unsightly cables
- The sounders could be located discreetly around the protected area, being integral to the automatic detectors
- The retro-fit made for a cost effective system, avoiding the high installation costs associated with a hard-wired alternative
- The installation process could be completed quickly, to comply with a demanding timescale
The environment was particularly harsh for fire detection, with low ceilings and a potentially smoky atmosphere in the bar and nightclub area. To accommodate false alarm risk, the control and indicating equipment (CIE) was programmed with a 90-second pre-alarm feature, enabling door staff to investigate any activation before a full evacuation alarm occurs.
The CIE, being addressable, displays the precise location and detector detail enabling rapid investigation to be deployed. At all times an immediate evacuation alarm can be manually generated and unless the pre-alarm alert is cancelled, a full alarm occurs upon expiry of the pre-alarm period.
To overcome evacuation issues caused by ambient noise within the establishment, flashing lights supplement the alarm sounders.
The system shares the redcare communication of the intruder alarm system, automatically reporting each full alarm to our Alarm Receiving Centre as well as any system fault that might arise.
Finally, we interlinked the system with the separate system protecting the remainder of the building so that they reported any activation to each other.
The verdict: from their Managing Director:
“The pre-alarm feature is very good, overcoming the risk that we might unnecessarily evacuate the place and lose custom. I was also delighted with the quality and neatness of components and the installation as a whole. The one thing that was finished on time.
Our first time using a wire free fire alarm equipment and our first using Crime Prevention Services, who also did our intruder alarm system. In both cases, it will not be the last!”
